Braiding methods for Synthetic Dreadlocks

How to braid synthetic extensions in the hair

For braiding extensions in, you will need: Spray bottle, to moisten the hair, Elastics to fasten the braids, Pointed comb to divide the hair, Hair Clips to hold the hair and a Quick beader or Latch hair tool to guide the hair through the loop on the dreadlock.

Before starting, it is important that the hair is clean and washed without the use of conditioner or other care products.

To ease the proces, wet the hair before or while you are installing. Wet hair is a lot easier to control and braid. When the hair dries around the dreadlock it ´grips´ firmly and wont fall out even though you will loose the elastics. And then you also avoid getting too much frizz.

For extra control over the hair, you can also use Aloe manuka gel.

The sections must be approx. 2-2.5 cm square in the neck and sides, and triangles in approx. same size on top of head. The division must be large enough to hold the weight of the dreadlock and at the same time adjust so that you get enough volume and will not work the shell. (picture of divisions) In addition, you must consider whether you want a parting in the hair, as it can change how the hair falls. Separation is made in the two front rows closest to the forehead.

You choose the two braiding methods according to what look you like best.

The French method is a regular braid and combines the hair colours really nice. It is also good if your own hair is a different color than the dreadlock, is will mix the colours and look awsome. The French method can be used for both long and short hair.

The fishtail method is good if you are installing dreadlocks in a colour close to your own hair color, it gathers the hair close to the roots, so you see more of the dreadlock. Fishtail is also good if you have very long hair, maybe longer than the dread, as you can braid the hair much closer to the scalp.

Elastics are used to close the braid. There are many different colors, and probably one that suits your particular dread. But it is best to match the elastic to the dread as at the end there will not be much of your own hair left to match. When you put the elastic on, it is good to `distribute` it a little, as otherwise there may be a clear depression in the hair. Be careful not to tighten the elastic too much as it may cause it to jump and make it tender faster. If you want to be sure of the elastic holder, you can get an extra one.
